Fresh white snow on Christmas morning, bright white lights strung over bustling streets, or white champagne bubbles on New Year’s — What classic imagery comes to mind when you think about the holidays? If you haven’t already guessed, at Architectural Ceramics, we can’t help but think of winter whites.
For interior designer Mary Douglas Drysdale, the vision for her client’s master bathroom started with a classic material choice: white marble. The end result is a space that will have you dreaming of a white Christmas, or for some white tile for your next renovation.
A Classically Planned Space
Classic design with a modern sensibility. That’s how DC metro-area interior designer, Mary Douglas Drysdale‘s aesthetic is often described. For her client’s master bathroom, she kept the tile selection classic and timeless by using white marble from our Thassos Collection. Drysdale incorporated the monochromatic marble throughout the space in a modern way, which leaves the space feeling chic instead of one-note.
Across from the entrance to the master bathroom, a focal wall with layered mirrors above a large soaking tub, draws you in.
“The all white palette is challenging,” Drysdale says of her design, “it requires a higher level of detail, where the fixtures and fittings carry a lot of the design burden. The large tub, by Kohler, is almost a piece of sculpture.”
Our large-format 18″x18″ white marble field tile underfoot also helps lead you into the space, past the dual vanities and around the corner into the water closet and shower areas.
The white-on-white bathroom creates a deceptively simple design, from the white tiled floors and walls, to the white sconces and drawer pulls. For Drysdale, she added interest through contrast and dimension.
“In this case, I covered everything in tile; some like the floor, was large format tile, while the walls were clad in both subway-sized Thassos and mosaic marble tile, keeping it fresh and light. The raised sinks,” Drysdale continues, “add dimension to the vanity, bringing modern interest to a classical plan.”
After walking through this winter wonderland and talking with the designer, it’s clear to see that an all-white bathroom can be contemporary and anything but bland.
